From May 2012 to December 2013, PITCO, in collaboration with International Resource Group (IRG), implemented the Municipality Water Supply Efficiency Improvement Program at the Karachi Water & Sewerage Board (KWSB) in Karachi, Pakistan. The project, funded by USAID, aimed to upgrade physical infrastructure by replacing inefficient pump-sets to achieve operational efficiencies and improve service delivery. The existing water pumping equipment had an efficiency range of 18-45%, leading to high electricity bills and inefficient operations. The project involved engaging three ISO-9906 certified pump suppliers to provide efficient pump-sets, addressing the needs of households that rely on the pumps operating for about 21 hours per day.

PITCO’s services included preparing technical, financial, and economic feasibility studies, developing bidding documents, and shortlisting and selecting ISO-9906 standardized pump-set suppliers. Our team conducted pre-installation audits to establish performance parameters of existing pump-sets, coordinated with KWSB to identify potential replacement sites, and designed suitable pump-sets based on audit data. PITCO also conducted post-installation audits to ensure efficiency improvements, supervised the recovery of old pump-sets, and conducted social and environmental impact assessments. The project aimed to enhance operational efficiency, reduce electricity consumption, and improve water supply services in Karachi.
