PITCO, as a subcontractor to International Resources Group, conducted the HT Capacitors Assessment Program from October 2010 to September 2015 under the USAID-funded Power Distribution Program. The project aimed to assess HT capacitors and energy meters installed at grid stations and 11KV feeders across Pakistan’s state-owned electricity distribution companies (DISCOs). The capacitors are used to reduce reactive power demand, lower current levels, and reduce demand and technical losses, enhancing the overall efficiency of the power system.
The services included visiting 417 grid stations, assessing the installed capacitor capacity, and identifying healthy but not in-circuit and damaged capacitors. Our team conducted detailed studies for bringing healthy capacitors into the circuit, estimated capital purchase for replacing damaged capacitors, and assessed the purchase and installation of capacitors on 132KV and 11KV feeders. PITCO also provided technical assistance during procurement, created awareness among field staff about the importance of capacitors, and trained them on maintenance and benefits of keeping capacitors healthy.
