PITCO, in partnership with the European Union, implemented resource and energy-efficient technologies in the sugar sector of Pakistan from March 2018 to February 2022. The project aimed to promote sustainable production of sugar by reducing specific energy consumption and supporting the adoption of energy-efficient and resource-efficient technologies. The initiative involved working with 70 sugar mills across Pakistan to standardize technology, improve access to finance, and mobilize relevant public sector authorities for a conducive regulatory regime.

The services provided included conducting detailed life cycle assessments, energy audits, and developing business cases for adopting energy-efficient equipment. PITCO facilitated financial closures for R&EE projects, trained financial institutions on risk assessment, and established a National Support Cell at PSMA. The project also involved capacity building for solution providers, developing standardized technical specifications, and creating a multi-stakeholder platform for promoting R&EE projects. The outcomes included significant energy savings, reduced carbon footprints, and enhanced awareness of sustainable practices in the sugar sector.
